Thousands of people at risk of starvation in Southern Africa will be receiving emergency food packs and urgent humanitarian assistance, thanks to a grant of £50,000 from Freemasons to Plan International UK.

An estimated 45 million people across Southern Africa are likely to be affected by record high temperatures and low rainfall, which has led to the worst drought for 35 years.

The world-famous Victoria Falls has become a trickle and Lake Kariba, a critical water source for both Zambia and Zimbabwe, is only 16 per cent full. An estimated 70 per cent of rural water sources in Zimbabwe have dried up.

Last year, Cyclones Idai and Kenneth caused widespread and very destructive flooding across the region, leaving already fragile communities in a poor state to deal with this fresh catastrophe.

Combined with the volatile political and economic situation in many states, the price of food has risen sharply. Families have been forced to reduce the quantity and frequency of meals, and often forgo healthcare. Many children are missing school to help support their families, affecting their long-term futures.

Freemasons from Yorkshire North & East Ridings have contributed to the grant that comes through the Masonic Charitable Foundation, which is funded by Freemasons, their families and friends, from across England and Wales.

Rose Caldwell, Chief Executive of Plan International UK, said:

“We’re very grateful for this generous grant which will allow Plan International to reach thousands of people suffering from severe shortages of food. It is critical that we act now to provide this support to those most at risk”

A spokesman from Provincial Grand Lodge said:

“I’m very pleased we’ve been able to help Plan International with their relief effort in Southern Africa. It’s clear that millions of people are at risk of a serious lack of food and clean water. This is a desperate situation and Plan and the other organisations helping on the ground need all the help and support we in the outside world can offer.”

Far too many older people spend Christmas entirely on their own, never receiving a single card or present. This past year, however, saw around 2,000 isolated and lonely older people who have contacted The Silver Line Helpline receive a gift and a card, thanks to a grant of £7,500 fromYorkshire North and East Ridings Freemasons through the Masonic Charitable Foundation (MCF), the freemasons charity.

The Silver Line offers emotional support and friendship to vulnerable and isolated older people. As well as its flagship 24/7 helpline, the charity offers a telephone befriending service which matches volunteers – Silver Line Friends – with an older person, many of whom do not have anyone else to chat to, for regular weekly phone calls. These become real friendships, transforming lives and giving older people a conversation to look forward to in a lonely week.

Almost 2,000 older people receive these weekly telephone friendship calls through The Silver Line, and each also received a Christmas parcel filled with festive goodies.

Freemasons from Yorkshire North and East Ridings Province have contributed to the grant that comes through the Masonic Charitable Foundation, which is funded by Freemasons, their families and friends, from across England and Wales. This donation is part of their strategic partnership with Age UK to tackle loneliness and isolation amongst older people.

Dame Esther Rantzen, founder of The Silver Line said: “The loneliness and neglect that many of our Silver Line callers experience is simply heart-breaking. A Christmas box of goodies is way of reassuring them that they have not been forgotten, that they are valued, and that we are thinking of them over Christmas. I know what a huge difference these gifts will make, and I am truly grateful to the Masonic Charitable Foundation and Yorkshire North and East Ridings Freemasons, for making them possible.”

At the annual ‘Jolly Boys’ Christmas Meeting on Monday 9th December Leopold Lodge 1760 forty members and guests celebrated with a festive board to which potential new members were invited.
A Christmas draw with numerous prizes generously donated by members which raised money for local organisations and charities. At the end of the evening, the following presentations were made:

£250     Salvation Army (to support their Christmas lunch for those in need)

£250     Rainbow Centre ( offering support to those in need in the Scarborough community)

£300     Martin’s House Hospice (based in Boston Spa and providing care and support for children with life-limiting conditions)

£250     St Catherine’s Hospice in Scarborough

£300     Myeloma Cancer Research (a Lodge member is currently being treated for this condition)

Events like this don’t just happen, and it was through the hard work of the Lodge Charity Steward, Kevin Howard (pictured) supported by the Master of Ceremonies Richard Gillett (Senior Warden) that the evening was a complete success. Not forgetting the support of all Lodge members during the year. In recent years this now annual event has attracted new members, and there are good signs this may be the case on this occasion!

Friday November the 29th at 17:00 saw the official switch-on of the new Christmas lights for the large tree in Dyer Lane, Beverley.

During 2019 local Freemasons had donated sufficient funds to enable this brand new extension to Beverley’s Festive lighting. The illuminated tree is dedicated to the work of the Motor Neurone Disease Association’s work in the East Riding and Hull.

Beverley’s Mayor, Councillor Duncan Jack, his Consort – his wife Joy, Freemasons (including W Bro Dr David Chambers the Deputy PGM, his wife Maureen and E Comp Jonathon Smith Deputy Grand Superintendent), MNDA personnel and members of the public gathered for the event. The Mayor thanked the Freemasons for their efforts and also for all their other local charitable activities. Sincere thanks were also expressed by Andrew Hancock of the MNDA.

A permanent plaque will be displayed adjacent to the tree to commemorate the occasion.

The Vacant Chair Ceremony. Helmsley Lodge 7075, November 2019

The Brethren of Helmsley Lodge 7075 performed The Vacant Chair ceremony at their November meeting in remembrance of the 54 Freemasons from the Province of Yorkshire, North and East Riding who lost their lives during The First World War and all others in subsequent conflicts.

The poignant and moving ceremony was presented in front of visitors and guests, who afterwards joined the Brethren of the Lodge at the Festive Board. Charitable donations were collected for Phoenix House, which is the Northern Rehabilitation Centre at Catterick Garrison, funded by Help For Heroes. The centre helps wounded, injured and sick military personnel to get back to active service or transition into civilian life.

Members of the Helmsley Lodge will be visiting Phoenix House to present the donation and to see for themselves the fantastic work carried out by the volunteers and staff.
